An Unusual Way to Get Close to my Granddaughter

My son and his 15-year-old daughter
came to visit my husband and me.
And when they left 3 words did I feel:
Blessed. Grateful. And Lonely.

I wanted to keep a piece of my granddaughter
close – with easy access.
So I asked her for her favorite song playlist.
And hit upon great success.

Why?
I could understand the singers’ words –
relate to each song’s messages and themes –
which will help us share magical moments
across miles, mountains and streams.

Here’s a sampling:

Strawberry Wine by Noah Kahan
I still remember
When thirty was old
And my biggest fear was September
when he had to go

A few cards and letters and one long distance call
We drifted away like the leaves in the fall
But year after year I come back to this place
Just to remember the taste
Of strawberry wine and seventeen

The hot July I still remember
When thirty was old
And my biggest fear was September
when he had to go
A few cards and moon saw everything
My first taste of love, whoa-oh, bittersweet
Green on the vine
Like strawberry wine

Tennessee Orange by Megan Moroney
Mama, I’m calling, I’ve got some news
Don’t you tell Daddy, he’ll blow a fuse
Don’t worry I’m doing okay

I know you raised me to know right from wrong
It ain’t what you think and I’m still writing songs
Just never thought I’d see the day
I’ve never felt this way

I met somebody, and he’s got blue eyes
He opens the door, and he don’t make me cry
He ain’t from where we’re from, but he feels like home
Yeah, he’s got me doing things I’ve never done

In Georgia, they’d call it a “sin”
I’m wearing Tennessee orange for him

7 Summers by Morgan Wallen
Yeah, you used to talk about getting even further South
Somewhere where the summer lasted all year ’round
Probably got a big ol’ diamond on your hand right now
Maybe a baby or a couple by now, long driveway to a big white house

But I wonder when you’re drinking if you find yourself thinking
About that boy from East Tennessee
And I know we both knew better, but we still said forever
And that was seven summers of Coke and Southern Comfort
Were we dumb or just younger, who knows?

Back then, you used to love the river and sippin’ on a Sixer with me
Does it ever make you sad to know that was seven summers ago?

Yeah, I bet your daddy’s so proud of how his little girl turned out
Think she dodged a bullet of a good old boy like me
‘Cause I still go drinkin’, same friends on Friday
Bought a few acres, couple roads off the highway
Guess you never saw things my way anyway

And here are a few more of her picks if you are feeling energetic and curious:
Forever by Noah Kahan
Mr. Saturday Night by Jon Pardi
Pink Sky by Zach Bryan
Writings On The Wall by Role Model
You’re Going To Go Far by Noah Kahan

I’m adding the above to my collection – much of which features Bob Dylan, Peter, Paul and Mary, Simon and Garfunkel, and of course, The Beatles and The Eagles.
I was in desperate need of an update and I got one thanks to my granddaughter and the time we spent together.
