My son, Harry Cohen, is running for re-election to the Hillsborough County Commission.
I HAVE A CONFESSION:
Until Harry stated running for office, I concentrated my attention on national and state elections – giving local elections little thought.
EPIPHANY:
· The local candidates we elect make decisions that touch our lives every day: zoning, growth, traffic, flooding, emergency services, congestion, fire and police protection and allocation of resources.
· These issues just don’t naturally get resolved and solutions implemented. We need experienced and competent people who do their due diligence, listen to constituents and ultimately do what’s best for our local community.
As I do every time Harry runs, when the first candidate signs start popping up on people’s lawns, I go into
CRAZY MOTHER MODE
I feel utter elation when I see a new sign appear in someone’s yard with his name on it.
My stomach sinks into my toes when I spot his opponent’s sign in the front yard of a random house I pass. I then begin to repeat this mantra:
I know I shouldn’t be this insanely hyper-vigilant.
I know I shouldn’t be this insanely hyper-vigilant.
It hardly helps.
Harry has earned broad support from public safety, labor and business organizations. Harry is endorsed by:
- Hillsborough County Firefighters
- Tampa Police Benevolent Association
- Sun Coast Police Benevolent Association
- Tampa Bay Builders Association
- Teamsters Local 79
- UA Plumbers & Pipefitters Local Union 123
- West Central Florida Labor Council / AFL-CIO
- Equality Florida Action PAC
- Democratic Hispanic Caucus of Florida
- Suncoast Tampa Association of Realtors
My stomach unclenches a little.
Strangers stop me in the aisles of the grocery store to tell me how positive their experience interacting with Harry has been. “We love Harry!” I hear – over and over again.
Music to my maternal ears.
My pounding headache eases somewhat.
But the thing I look forward to the most is when our local newspaper – the Tampa Bay Times – publishes their list of CANDIDATE ENDORSEMENTS.
And on Saturday, October 3, at 7:29 AM they did just that:
Wow, that very evening I got my first good night’s rest since the campaign began.
Harry is also endorsed across party lines. Both Republicans Sheriff Chad Chronister and State Attorney Suzy Lopez have endorsed Harry.
With that across-political-lines support, I stop stuffing my mouth with Hershey milk chocolate squares. My pounding headache is even subsiding a bit.
And then I do what every dedicated, driven and partially neurotic candidate’s mom would do: I ASK FOR HELP!

WE CANNOT BE COMPLACENT
I hope you will support Harry.
Why?
Because he is the most experienced and capable person running for Hillsborough County Commission District 1. Just ask his mother!
Thank you from the bottom of my heart and Keep Preserving Your Bloom,

(Harry’s mom)
